She always knew there was something special about her. She could feel it. Not only that she was important to her country as the Princess of the Fire Nation, but that she was important to the world somehow. She wasn't wrong. When she was eighteen, her nanny told her of her destiny. This little girl, this young Princess, who might one day take the throne of the Fire Nation, was also the Avatar, who might one day save the world from destruction. As excited as she was at the thought, she was also frightened. Once the word was out about her destiny, what would her friends think? Her family? Her father, the Fire Lord, how would he take it?
He didn't take it well. When the Princess's caretaker learned that she was the Avatar, she took it first to the Fire Lord, who at first didn't seem interested. But later, the caretaker overheard a devious plot of his.
This was during a time of oppression and intolerance. These were still the early days of civilization. The art of elemental bending was not quite so common. When the men possessed this skill, they were revered and worshipped. But when the women had such a power, they were suppressed, and they would be punished if they ever displayed their bending in public. When the Fire Lord, a big figure in the Gender Oppression, heard that his own daughter not only had the ability to firebend, but to bend all the elements, he started to see her differently. He and his daughter never had much of a relationship. He was disappointed that she was born a female; he wanted an heir to his throne. From birth, he considered her to be a disappointment. The father and daughter were never close to begin with, but when he learned that she was the Avatar, he was sure that he should never let her powers blossom. He secretly had her Princess status revoked, and set up to determine which of his nephews would inherit the Crown instead. Then, he started to plan her murder.
The caretaker overheard his devious plans. Determined not to let him harm the Princess, she escorted the young woman out of the Fire Nation, and the two became exiles.
